Campaign History

We are Divest Middlebury, an informal coalition of Middlebury College students who are calling for our school's administration to remove our financial holdings from the top 200 fossil fuel companies and reinvest that money in businesses that support both people and our planet. We believe that now is the time for Middlebury to take a stand as an environmental leader; the college has an unprecedented opportunity to lead the rapidly growing national divestment movement and affect change beyond our campus.

Our campaign began in 2012, drawing students from the Socially Responsible Investing Club (SRI) and Sunday Night Group (SNG). We collaborate with Middlebury College faculty, staff, and alumni; the Advisory Committee on Socially Responsible Investing, Patrick Norton, the Vice President for Finance and Treasurer; Ron Liebowitz, the President of the College; and members of the Board of Trustees. We are also part of several national networks of colleges and universities working for fossil fuel divestment, including 350.org, the Responsible Endowments Coalition, and the Divestment Student Network.
